Editing Blocks In-Place... Using the Reference Editor

Editing Blocks In-Place... Using the Reference Editor.

When using blocks, we may sometimes need to edit objects within blocks. However, this is not as simple as editing ordinary AutoCAD objects. There's a command for that: REFEDIT.

To access the command, all we have to do is to select ‘Edit Block In-Place' in the right click menu that appears upon right-clicking on the relevant block. We need to select which block (sometimes blocks within blocks) we wish to edit.

Once we complete the selection, all other objects lose focus while the selected block remains highlighted on the screen. The reference editing tab also appears on the ribbon strip.

All that will be done at this step will be done using standard editing commands within AutoCAD. You can see our block before and after editing in Figures 4 and 5 respective

Click on the ‘Save Changes' button once you're done editing or the ‘Discard Changes' if you change your mind. If you accept the changes, all blocks with the same name in the drawing will be updated.

AutoCAD also has another developed block editor. That can be accessed with the BEDIT command or by double clicking on the block and then selecting the required block from the list as we did above. Although both editors have the same uses, the BEDIT command can be used in editing dynamic commands. Moreover, this new editor does not allow us to use UCS and some other 3 dimensional commands. I therefore refrain from using this command unless I have to work on dynamic commands.

More tips and tricks

The long-right-click trick.

If you have a grip-selected object, you can use long right-click to copy or move the selected object.
Press the RMB till your cursor changes to an arrow then move the object. When you release the RMB you
can select Copy, Move or Paste as block from the context menu.

How to convert a drawing from inches to centimeters (or vice versa) ?

First of all - an Autocad drawing in the modelspace is unitless. A drawing unit can be anything you wish. A square of 10x10 units can be 10mm, 10m, 10", 10 feets, whatever. The real physical units are required only when you want to represent the drawing model for the real world - for dimensioning, plotting (plot scale), paperspace and annotation functions.

But if you really want to scale your drawing from inches to milimeters, centimeters, meters - or vice versa - e.g. from centimeters to inches (i.e. between metric and imperial units), you can use the SCALE command.

When going e.g. from inches to centimers, you have to scale up your drawing 2.54x. Run the SCALE command, select All objects, specify *0,0 (global) as the reference point and enter 2.54 as the scale factor.

You can prepare a menu macro button to perform this conversion operation automatically (menu macros use ";" instead of Enter) - some examples:

[Inches->CM]^C^C_SCALE;_All;;*0,0;2.54; [Inches->MM]^C^C_SCALE;_All;;*0,0;25.4; [CM->Inches]^C^C_SCALE;_All;;*0,0;0.3937; In newer Autocad versions (2006 and up) you can simply set the correct units in FORMAT>UNITS>INSERTION SCALE in both drawings - when you then insert the xref/block, Autocad will scale it for you automatically - it is far less painless
